Pete Seeger passes in the flesh, but not in spirit

He could write, he could play, he could sing, and he cared so much that much of his time and talent were devoted to activism for improved human rights.

We can let some of his best known work speak for itself. He wrote the first song and popularized the second.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the flowers gone?
The girls have picked them ev’ry one.
Oh, When will you ever learn?
Oh, When will you ever learn?
young girls
They’ve taken husbands ev’ry one.
young men
They’re all in uniform.
soldiers
They’ve gone to graveyards ev’ry one.
graveyards
They’re covered with flowers ev’ry one.
flowers
Young girls have picked them ev’ry one.

We Shall Overcome

We shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Darling here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We shall overcome someday
Well we’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand
We’ll walk hand in hand someday
Darling here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We’ll walk hand in hand someday
Well we shall live in peace, we shall live in peace
We shall live in peace someday
Darling here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We shall live in peace someday
Well we are not afraid, we are not afraid
We shall overcome someday
Yeah here in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday
Hey we shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Darling here in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday
We shall overcome someday

Both of these songs have been widely adapted or copied for use by many, many other bands which achieved high critical acclaim. This guy is a legend.

From Wikipedia:

When asked about his religious or spiritual views, Seeger replied: “I feel most spiritual when I’m out in the woods. I feel part of nature. Or looking up at the stars. [I used to say] I was an atheist. Now I say, it’s all according to your definition of God. According to my definition of God, I’m not an atheist. Because I think God is everything. Whenever I open my eyes I’m looking at God. Whenever I’m listening to something I’m listening to God.”
